Don’t Give Up On God Because He Won’t Give Up On You
“And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.” Jonah 3:1-2
When God gave me this topic to write about, this was a day that wasn’t really a good day for me. Some things had happened at work that I wasn’t to please about so I was feeling a little down. My day ended at work so now I was doing my first job of being a mother, and taking my son to football practice. We stopped at my mother’s job as we had some time to kill. When I got there, she asked me to come in so I could meet someone. I went in, and the individual asked me were there any positions that I was looking at online for employment. I told her yes, and which one. She made a phone call right on the spot to talk to the person that would hire for said job. I’ve yet to get the results from the phone call, but I’m not worried because how awesome was that. I had been asking God to open up another door for a job where I could have more financial stability, and the Lord put someone in my path the same day that could help me accomplish that.
Later on that day, I was asking God, “What scripture(s) do I need to come from?” He brought to remembrance the story about Jonah and the fish. I’m going to give you a condensed version of the story. Take time to go and read it for yourself though. In the first chapter of Jonah, God asked Jonah to go the city of Nineveh, and cry against the city for their wicked ways. Jonah didn’t want to go, so he fled, and got on a ship to Tarshish. The Lord caused a great storm, the crew thru Jonah overboard, and a big fish swallowed him. Now I don’t know about you, but if someone throws me in any type of water, I’m panicking so I can imagine how Jonah feels. He’s probably thinking, “I’m dead.” God wasn’t through with him yet, as he isn’t with us. The Lord had a big fish swallow Jonah up. He stayed in the fish belly for three days, alive mind you. If you were Jonah, what thoughts would be going through your mind? In the second chapter, he cried out to the Lord, the Lord spoke to the fish, and the fish threw Jonah up on dry land. We can all guess where he ended up in the third chapter. The Lord told him a second time to go to the city of Nineveh and cry out to the city. Jonah did, the people repented, and God forgave them.
Some of you are probably thinking, “What does the story of Jonah have to do with my topic or my day I shared in the beginning?” If I were reading from your perspective, I would think the same thing. We all go through things in life, some good and some bad. Some things we go through are because God needs for us to go in a certain direction, and some are of our own choosing. In the midst of all this, God doesn’t give up on us. That’s what he did for Jonah. Even though Jonah outright disobeyed him, God still didn’t harm or kill him. He kept fighting for Jonah, and the people of Nineveh. He knew Jonah would be the one to turn them back to him. He does the same for you on a daily basis even when we don’t deserve it.
I had been praying, and seeking God on whether or not I should start looking for another job. I hadn’t heard from him so I was abiding my time. I had applied for positions, but I asked God to close the doors if those jobs weren’t meant for me. So far that request has been fulfilled. Even though I’m going through what I am at my job, I still thank God because he loves me enough to sustain me; mind, body, and spirit. Until he opens that door, of many doors, he has me exactly where he wants me to be. I’m there to either fulfill my purpose or to prepare me for my next level. Now, I’m not going to say it’s not hard because it is. Some days doing things you don’t want to do, which are for your good, and his glory, like holding your tongue is hard. Hello Somebody! Just know that God hasn’t given up on you so don’t give up on him.
I can’t close this post without sharing some things that you can do when you find yourself in the place where you feel God isn’t present. He’s always present. Remember that.
- Continually seek him. No matter what it feels or look like. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33” He’s going to give you what you’re asking for if that’s his will. Just know it’s in his time, and not ours.
- Remind him of his promises. Read your bible. Read your bible. Read your bible. It’s full of God’s promises to us. I bought a book called God’s Promises For Your Every Need by Dr. A.L. Gill from Amazon. You can purchase if you want something you can go right too. How can you fight when you don’t have what you need to fight with, which is his word. Tell God, your word says, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
- Last but not least. Don’t give up on yourself and especially don’t give up on God.
