Skeletons in the Closet
19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.[a]” John 3:19-21 (NLT)
We have all heard the saying of my title at some point in our life. Skeletons in your closet means you have things in your life that you pray no one ever finds out about. We have all done things that were not Christ-like. We have all done things that we are not proud of. These things could possibly hurt people that we love and care about. For proper context so you can follow, our darkness will be referred to as skeletons in this blog. What if God asked you to reveal those skeletons so that you can bring someone to Christ?
That question is a lot to ask depending on what that skeleton is. As I was reading and studying this verse, it talks about God being a light, and we as believers should want to be a light as well. We sometimes cannot be a light because of fear that our sins will be revealed. We care more about what other people think than what God thinks about us. God already knows all our skeletons, so it is nothing new to him. God asking you to reveal your skeletons is not to hurt you or anyone else. It is to show others that you can overcome any darkness if you allow the Lord in your life.
I encourage you to share your skeletons if it will shed light on someone else’s darkness. You bring others to the light by showing them your light. Revealing some of your past skeletons can be uncomfortable at times. I know because I have done it before. It gets easier and easier the more you do it. I am not telling you to share all your business. Let me make that clear. There are somethings that you can share to help others. God will give you the discernment on what, when, and where.
Seek God today as he uses you to bring others to Christ. Use your light to bring others out of the darkness. Show them through word and deed how much better it is when you come out of darkness into the light.
