Who Are You Really Cheering For?
Every year families get together for the Iron Bowl. Auburn or Alabama. No middle ground. The rivalry runs deep, and even though the first game was way back in 1893—and nobody in my house nor yours was anywhere near existing then—we still show up like our cheering changes the score.
They stopped the Iron Bowl from 1907 to 1947, picked it back up in 1948, and people jumped right back in like nothing happened. That kind of loyalty is wild when you think about it.
This year, while everyone was yelling at the TV, something hit me:
We show up strong for football, but do we show up like that for Jesus?
He’s been on the field fighting for us for over 2000 years. Blocking plays. Running interference. Winning battles we never saw. And yet, we often give louder praise to a touchdown than to a miracle. We’ll give money, energy, and time to a team. But can we honestly say we give Jesus the same?
It made me ask myself: If I’m not playing with Jesus…who am I playing for?
Think of the everyday believer who loves God but feels stretched thin. They’re not trying to drift. Life just gets loud, and faith can quietly slide to the back burner.
They feel the pull: they love Jesus, but consistency is tough. Worship sometimes feels heavy. Prayer gets squeezed out by everything else.
The tension is simple: they want to grow, but comfort wins too often. It’s easier to cheer for a team than to show up for their own spiritual life.
Then Scripture steps in:
“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
It’s not about football. It’s about focus. Jesus isn’t demanding a stadium performance—He wants your attention, affection, and yes.
Once they realize Jesus has been fighting for them long before they knew Him, gratitude replaces guilt. Worship becomes a response. They start showing up because they want to, not because they “should.”
Take a moment and ask God where your loyalty has shifted. Invite Him to realign your focus.
Jesus isn’t keeping score. He’s not comparing your prayers to your screen time. He just wants you close. And He celebrates your return every single time.
So here’s the real question:
If your life had a scoreboard, who would it say you’re rooting for?
Start where you are. One prayer. One choice. Step onto the field with the One who’s been fighting for you all along.
