Make a U-Turn

Growing up and traveling with family as a child, we used actual maps to get to our destination. Then came MapQuest, GPS systems, and now Maps on our phones. If you’ve ever used Maps, you already know—if you miss a turn or go the wrong way, that calm little voice will keep saying, “Make a U-turn.”

Sometimes we do it immediately. Sometimes we ignore it. And sometimes… we try to find another route because we don’t want to turn around.

When was the last time God told you to make a U-turn, but you kept driving straight?

Maybe He told you to leave a relationship, walk away from a habit, stop entertaining certain conversations, or trust Him with a decision. Instead of obeying, you took another exit hoping it would still get you where you wanted to go.

Y’all don’t have to say Amen because I already know. I’ve done it too.

The hard part about ignoring God’s direction is that delays start showing up. Suddenly there’s traffic, confusion, exhaustion, frustration, or you feel spiritually stuck. It reminds me of Jonah. God told him to go to Nineveh, but Jonah boarded a ship headed the opposite direction. He thought he could outrun instruction, but all he found was a storm.

The believer trying to follow Jesus knows obedience is not always easy. Our relationship with Him shapes how we move, but fear, pride, comfort, and uncertainty can make us hesitate. Still, God doesn’t tell us to turn around to punish us. He does it because He sees what we cannot see.

Sometimes the U-turn is protection.
Sometimes it’s preparation.
Sometimes it’s mercy.

Here’s the framework: pause, listen, obey, trust, and keep moving. Stop arguing with the instruction. Listen for God’s voice through prayer and His Word. Obey even when it feels inconvenient. Trust that His direction is better than your own understanding. Then keep moving forward without looking back at what He told you to leave behind.

Growth with God is a lifelong journey. Nobody gets it right every time. But every act of obedience gets us closer to where He’s leading us.

This week, ask yourself: “What is God asking me to turn away from that I keep trying to drive past?”
