Twisting God’s Word for Our Intent

“But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?” Mark 2:24 (NLT)

In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were running rampart for lack of a better word.  They were doing any and everything.  It was not pleasing in the eyesight of God.  God gave Moses the Ten Commandments for the people to follow (Exodus 20:17-17).  When Jesus died on the cross, he did away with the law.  Today, we must abide by laws on an everyday basis.  If not, there are consequences for our actions.  Please do not get it twisted.  Just as there are consequences now, there are still consequences based on God’s word.  This means you still cannot do what you want, and not suffer the consequences of said actions (Galatians 6:7).  How many of us use the words of God for our purpose and not His?

In this passage of scripture, you will find Jesus and his disciples walking through a field on the Sabbath Day.  The disciples were hungry and began picking and eating the grain.  The Pharisees saw this, and asked Jesus why were his disciples breaking the law by harvesting grain on a Sunday?  Were the disciples really harvesting the grain?  No, but the Pharisees needed something to blame Jesus for because they disliked him.  The scripture says, “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (NLT) 

When we study and correctly explain God’s word, we do not need to add or take away from it.  It stands on its own.  I have known and heard people change God’s word to benefit them.  They apply some of God’s word to their lives but use others to condemn God’s people.  That is not how this works.  God’s word applies to all believers and sinners alike.  Romans 3:23 (NLT) says, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” 

Today, I encourage you to read and study God’s word.  If you are an unbeliever, this will help when others talk to you about Christ.  You will have no misconception because you know what the word says.  Believers, we cannot choose to follow some verses in the Bible and ignore others because we choose too.  Our life is to be an example of God’s word.
